Eastern Hemlock
Here is one of the nicest evergreens available. Eastern Hemlock and its cultivars have a soft evergreen foliage that will tolerate shade quite well unlike most evergreens. Unfortunately they are in short supply lately due to a pest that is making its way around Michigan. The pest is called Wooly Adelgid, and it is lethal to Hemlock if not treated. It has not been found in our area thankfully, but if you have any Hemlock you should monitor it occasionally and report any infestation found. The bugs look like white fuzzy balls on the underside of the branches.
Hemlocks are too beautiful to not plant due to this pest, although if you choose to plant them, know that this pest will likely have to be controlled at some point in the future.
